Crossroads of emotions
Fucecchio rises on the right bank of the Arno river, halfway between Florence, Pisa and Lucca.
Its history is closely linked to the Via Francigena that, in this area, crosses the Arno to continue towards the Valdelsa, and to the presence of the Medici family, who during the Renaissance established here the administrative center of the grand ducal farms.
The Cadolingi Counts of Pistoia were responsible for the construction, in the tenth century, of the Castle and the Church of San Salvatore, which still dominate the village from Poggio Salamartano, along with the Collegiate Church of San Giovanni Battista.
What remains of the medieval castle is now part of the Corsini Park, where there is also the Civic and Diocesan Museum which documents the history of Fucecchio through numerous archaeological finds and a gallery of paintings and which, thanks to the ornithological collection, recalls the proximity of the Padule di Fucecchio.
This natural area, known for being the largest internal swamp in Italy, was enhanced and exploited starting from the Renaissance, when Cosimo I de' Medici had the bridge built in Cappiano that crossed and, if necessary, regulated the course of the Usciana canal.
Today the Padule is one of the last refuges for many animal species and can be visited on foot, by bike along the paths that cross it or with traditional boats. Here, as in the nearby Boschi delle Cerbaie, you can come across new views of the Tuscan countryside.
Fucecchio’s name is associated with that of the famous journalist Indro Montanelli (1909-2001), who, despite having lived and worked mainly in Rome and Milan, always remained linked to his hometown, so much so that he wanted his studies to be fully transferred right here, in the Montanelli Bassi Foundation, today a place of visit and study dedicated to this important figure of the twentieth century.
